Gardening column: Outdoor rooms create respite

A week ago, I spent a couple of hours with fifth-graders at an elementary school, showing them basics, such as how to use a shovel to dig, then letting them pile dirt into wheelbarrows and fill several raised beds.

They learned why they needed to add peat moss to amend heavy soil and how to mix it in, then how and why they needed to rake it smooth so they could plant sunflower seeds. We built a compost bin and talked about how important that was.

Finally, after the seeds were planted, everyone wanted to get involved in the watering process. Their willingness to work hard and continue until the bell rang for lunch told me volumes and confirmed what I already knew – that gardening is a very special activity. I'm sure other classroom subjects that year (and day) weren't met with that kind of enthusiasm. (I have to confess I was more than a little jealous of their boundless energy.)

Gardening is much more than just mowing grass, planting, pruning and treating plants for diseases and pests.

This outdoor classroom allows us to be kids again, too, and get dirt under our fingernails and on our clothes, perspire freely, get deliberately wet while watering plants and drench ourselves while we get drinks from the hose.

It is also a creative outlet when other things in our lives are “all work and no play” — and it leads to the pleasant hours when the work is done and we can relax and enjoy the leisure of the garden and satisfying views of the landscape we've created.

To fully enjoy this aspect of the garden, you will want to locate and create outdoor rooms. They are there; you just need to find them:

♦You may only have a small space — or maybe you are blessed with a large yard — but whichever it is, set aside time away from the TV and phone while you explore the possibilities.

♦Carry a folding lawn chair and a cold drink of your choice with you on this journey, and begin by positioning the chair in an inviting-looking spot in your landscape.

Get comfortable and, if what you see from that spot makes you feel relaxed and you enjoy looking at the view it affords, decide to make that one of your outdoor rooms.

♦Continue doing this all around the yard or garden until you have three or four areas picked out.

It's important to make sure each one offers you a different view of the garden and house.

Cheap Patio Furniture: Selecting the Right Patio Furniture ...

Selecting the right cheap patio furniture can be a pain if you have not given any thought on the patio. Many factors go in to selecting of the furniture. Here are few factors to consider.

· You should consider the size of your patio while opting for furniture. If you have a small garden space then opt for small sized (2 seater) chairs and tables, folding sets, which take, up less space. A 60 cm round table and furniture will also do the trick.

· For terraced and balconied areas a folding set is a great option. For a large space garden a fixed patio set like wooden furniture is a good option.

· When choosing tables there are number of table structures you can consider like fixed, folding, extending, pedestal etc. Shapes too vary with square, hexagonal, oval, rectangle, round being the major ones.

· For chairs you could go for fixed, folding, sofas and bar stools as per your requirement. For storage purposes you can also go for stacking options.

So discuss the furniture needs with your retailer before heading for purchase.
