132-year-old workshop drives the railways

MUMBAI: For more than a century, the Parel Workshop has been making a sterling contribution to India's growth story.

The 132-year-old production unit has come a long way from being a repairing unit to manufacturing hub as it now makes locomotives for the railways and private companies.

Parel Workshop was established in 1879 as a steam locomotive repair unit. Over the years, the shop has diversified into carrying out different functions like diesel locomotive maintenance, accident relief and breakdown crane maintenance. It now manufactures locomotives for broad and narrow gauge networks. "Parel Workshop has manufactured 128 broad gauge diesel locomotives since March 2007," said Suneet Sharma, chief workshop manager of Parel Workshop.

Of these, 72 locomotives have been manufactured for private firms like Steel Authority of India Ltd, Tata Steel , National Thermal Power Corporation, Jindal Steel and Adani Port. Nearly 56 locomotives have been manufactured for the Indian Railways.

Currently, the workshop has orders for 70 locomotives, of these 30 are for private companies. On an average, the factory is able to roll out at least three broad gauge engines, which are used to haul the wagons.

These engines are custom-made for industrial use. "We have been able to contribute Rs 486 crore to the public exchequer by the sale of these engines," Sharma said. Recently, the workshop refurbished a 94-year-old steam engine to haul the train on the Neral-Matheran route.

Sharma said, "In 2006, two locomotives were manufactured for the Neral-Matheran section of the Central Railway. Buoyed by the success, four locomotives rolled out for the Kalka-Shimla section of the Northern Railway in 2008-09."

Impressed with the results, the Railway Board told officials of Parel Workshop to manufacture 16 more locomotives-11 for Kalka-Shimla section of Northern Railway, three for North Central Railway's Gwalior section and two for Darjeeling's Himalayan Railway.
