Live Wire: Bone marrow registry fee is tax deductible
Q: How does one get placed on the bone marrow donation list? Someone said you have to pay to get on the list. Is that true? - W.M., Fayetteville
A: You might be asked to pay something, but imagine how terrific you'd feel if your bone marrow helped save someone else's life.
At that point, any fee you'd paid to join the marrow registry would almost certainly be long forgotten.
Besides, if you itemize on your tax return, it's a deductible expense.
You've probably noticed that we haven't mentioned an exact dollar figure. The National Marrow Donor Program says the total cost to add a new member to its Be The Match Registry is about $100, which covers to cost of the testing needed to match donors to searching patients and other costs too.
The program says some of those costs typically are covered by donations made by others. But, it says, funds aren't always available, so new members sometimes are asked to pay some of the registration costs when they join.
Registrants have to be between the ages of 18 and 60 and meet some health guidelines. They also have to be willing to donate to any patient in need.
For more information, call the National Marrow Donor Program at (800) 627-7692 or check marrow.org.
Q: How long does a Chapter 13 bankruptcy stay on your credit record? - P.G., Fayetteville
A: Seven years, starting from the date that you filed for bankruptcy.
If the information remains on your credit report after that point, you can file a dispute with the credit bureau(s) in question.
If you filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you'd have to wait an additional three years for it to edge off your credit report. That information can be reported for 10 years.
In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the debtor reorganizes his finances and pays them off over time. In a Chapter 7, the debtor pays off what he can and his debts are then erased - though the fact of his bankruptcy remains, of course, on his credit record.
Q: Can alimony be drawn directly from your ex-spouse's Social Security check? - D.D., Fayetteville
A: Yep.
Social Security benefits can be garnisheed, levied or otherwise withheld by the federal government for a number of reasons, including enforcement of alimony obligations.
Other reasons: enforcement of child support obligations; collection of unpaid federal taxes; or collection of nontax debts owed to other federal agencies.

Valley teen battling leukemia urges bone marrow donations : News ...
A 14-year-old girl battling cancer is calling on the community to help save her and the lives of others.
Action 4 News spoke to Rio Grande Valley resident Lily Lopez last week.
She was diagnosed with leukemia about a year ago and is in need of a bone marrow transplant but first she needs to find a match.
The family has held several registry drives to help but despite their efforts, her father says response from the community hasn't been what they had hoped for.
He believes some people maybe misinformed about the donation process.
They are willing to educate the public by teaming up with the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and hosting several bone marrow registry events.
Melissa Elizondo with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center spoke to Action 4 News.
"Wwhat that means for us here in the Valley is that most of our patients are Hispanic and when you're looking for a match your best bet beyond your family is going to be within your own ethnic background,” Elizondo said. “It's a little bit of your time, for someone else's entire life"
Lopez agrees adding that she and others need help.
"I've gone through way worse than that, so obviously I’m still here, so it doesn’t really hurt that much,” Lopez said about the process.
To register on the National Bone Marrow Registry, one must be between 18 to 60 years of age, in general good health and be willing to actually donate bone marrow if found to be a match.
The next bone marrow registry event for Lily Lopez will be held on Monday, June 27th at Boogedy Bears at 2606 International Boulevard in Brownsville from 6 to 8 p.m.
Another registry drive will be held Saturday, July 9th at Gold's Gym off Dove Street in McAllen.
Those who can't make it out to one of these drives are asked to the National Bone Marrow Registry website.
