Ministry Funds Millions In Bid To Expand Forest Cover
In an effort to help the country improve its dwindling tree cover, the Kenyan government has entered in yet another revolutionary that is aimed at speeding up planting and protection of trees to their maturity. Coming barely two years after developing a policy that requires all farmers to plant trees on 10 per cent of their agricultural land, the Wildlife and Forestry Ministry has again entered into an agreement with the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO), an umbrella grouping of women grouping in the country. According to the Minister for Wildlife and Forestry Dr. Noah Wekesa, members of the organization, who are found in all parts of the country will plant trees on their farms as well as plant trees on forests within their neighborhood. “With the guidance of Kenya Forest Service (KFS) incidences of forest destruction and soil erosion among other adverse effects which resulted in degraded farmlands yielding little or no food for community will be a thing of the past,” he says. The minister states that Kenya requires 7.6 billion shillings (85.4 million U. S. dollars) annually to purchase 384 million seedlings in order to meet the United Nations’ requirement of a 10 percent forest cover by the year 2030.Temperate Forest Plants - News

The Most Elegant Plant in the Woods | The Daily Wing
Here is a plant that will bring you to your knees. You’ll find it in coniferous woods, north woods, boreal woods, where the Greek god Boreas blows in the cold winds of winter.
You’ll smile when you find it. And its elegance will, at first glance, weaken your knees. You’ll drop to the soil to dwell with its two, tiny pink flowers dangling from a wispy stalk. Then, in the presence of Twinflower, you’ll wish you were three inches tall.
So here’s a tradition continued. I blogged on Twinflower last year. I’ll blog on it every June for as long as I am able. This is, after all, the the most elegant plant in the woods.
Northerners across the globe can enjoy Twinflower. Among its many delights is that it is circumpolar, occurring in cool temperate forests around the globe. It’s a dainty plant thriving, here and on the far sides of oceans, across climates and high latitudes a bit harsh on humans.
It is also Carl Linnaeus’ favorite flower. A botanist, physician and zoologist, Linnaeus is often depicted holding Twinflower.
