Victoria: Three ways to see Melbourne

Melbourne is a city that oozes cool. It leaks through the cracks of the regal architecture and seeps from gaps in the cobblestone streets to create a lively atmosphere.

A bohemian culture is reflected in the graffiti-splattered walls and laneway cafes that spill out into the street. An array of performers add to the scenery, and their money-filled guitar cases confirm their actual talent. Walking down an alleyway can lead to discovery, as some of the city’s best bars are discreetly tucked away for locals to frequent and visitors to find. Discovering the city is a highlight, and many modes of transport are available to do just this.

1. GRAB A BIKE AND GET YOUR BEARINGS

Those who can only read a map upside down will find great delight in Melbourne’s design. Its grid-like blueprint and modest size makes the city centre easily navigable and almost impossible to get lost in. With a new sight around each corner, pedalling past on two wheels makes covering the cafe-strewn streets a lot quicker.

Along with normal bike rentals located all over the city, Melbourne has recently launched a new public transport Bike Share incentive. It has been developed for short trips across the city where the first 30 minutes of bike hire is free. With 50 blue bike stations across the city and a downloadable map, this is one cheap and easy way to sneak in a little sightseeing.

Those keen to spend a little longer on two wheels can stop by Rentabike at Federation Square (www.rentabike.net.au). Full day bike hire is available but the company also offers guided bike tours. Elsewhere, Real Melbourne Bike Tours takes visitors through the theatre districts, down hidden laneways and past city landmarks. The same company also has a Photography Workshop for those inspired by the artistic works they pedal past. Regardless of whether your clients fly solo or take a guided tour, be sure they have a camera with them to document their discoveries.

2. WALK AND WINDOW SHOP

The most traditional means of transport is also the most practical for Melbourne. Trekking around on two legs leaves hands free to carry purchases. While Chapel Street is a renowned shopping strip and boutiques are dotted throughout the CBD, the suburb of Fitzroy provides an alternative shopping experience. The grunge of Brunswick Street is its appeal and the dingy facade hides a remarkable collection of stores and people.
