When the commissioner of baseball negates a divorce settlement ...

How often does the Commissioner of Major League Baseball have a say in the division of assets during a divorce settlement? Not very often. Frank McCourt and Jamie McCourt are unlike most of us in that they are both fighting for the ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers in their divorce settlement. Last week, the bitter couple was able to agree to a settlement but this week that all changed.

While it is not clear what the exact details of the agreed upon divorce settlement were, it was clear that Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig had to approve of the settlement because it involved a $3 billion television rights deal with Fox. The reported multi-billion dollar deal would have provided Frank McCourt with $385 million, and it is thought the amount would have been used by McCourt to meet the payroll demands of the Dodgers.

The Commissioner of Major League Baseball reviewed the deal and rejected it explaining that the divorce settlement would have diverted nearly half of the Dodger's immediate funding to the McCourts. In a public statement the commissioner said the deal would have "mortgaged the future of the franchise" and threatened to financially hurt the club in the long run. A statement released by Frank McCourt's attorney said the Commissioner's decision was disappointing.

The result of the Commissioner's decision is that Frank and Jamie McCourt have to reach a new divorce settlement. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been owned by the couple since 2004, but the question of who owns the ball club post-divorce has not been settled since the couple separated two years ago.
