1-year-old farmers market spreads under 200-year-old oak

Fresh produce, baked goods and even a made-to-order omelet station are all part of the second year of a popular farmers market held under a 200-year-old Bur oak tree.

In addition to the fruits, vegetables, herbs and meat from more than a dozen local farmers participating in the weekly event, the Forest Hills UMC Farmers Market welcomes other food vendors selling artisan breads, muffins, desserts and canned goods.

Local farms participating are Franklin’s Real Food Farms and Mamushi Nature Farm, Nashville’s Howell Farms and Buffalo Valley Farm, Delvin Farms in College Grove, Sun Fresh Farms in Lebanon, Kelley’s Berry Farm in Castalian Springs, Riversong Farm in Nunnelly, Hickerson Farms in Chapsmanboro, Red River Farm in Clarksville, Peaceful Pastures in Hickman and Womack Farms in Pembroke.

New this year, Savor the Flavor chefs Eleni Vavouris and Joelle Upton, are serving breakfast, alternating between omelets and French toast each weekend.

Anne’s Cakes of Nashville and Papa C’s Pies of Brentwood prepare baked goods. Gourmet dog treats come from Daisy’s Delicacies of Brentwood, while Petti Branch Farm of Prospect provides canned goods. Other vendors include coffees from Roast Inc., pizzas by Geadello’s of Nashville, artisan breads by Milo Farm Natural Bakery in Centerville, Creole seafood pies by Doc Braden’s of Nashville and fresh pasta and sauces by Alfresco Pasta in Nashville.

Last week, the farmers market gave up its regular spot at Forest Hills United Methodist Church to set up, temporarily at least, at the Town Center Saturdays event on Brentwood’s Town Center roundabout. The farmers market will be there again on Aug. 20 and Oct. 22.

But this coming weekend it will be back at the church, 1250 Old Hickory Blvd., just past the Granny White Pike intersection. Hours are from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday through the end of October.

morton tree talk » BUR OAK

A warm fall weekend in 2001 brought my family and me out to the west side of the Arboretum. We wanted to walk the area where the new Prairie Visitor Station was going to be built. We hiked along the prairie trails, crossed over Willoway Brook and found the foundation of the old bank barn on the hill. After we read the inscription in the old mortar, we all noticed the huge old oak tree not far away.

The sheer size and dominance of the tree was awe inspiring. My husband and I lifted the kids through the underbrush (and a bit of poison ivy) to get to the base of the tree. We all stood in silence and looked up into the canopy. The massive Bur oak leaves completely shaded the area. I can honestly say that I have never been so moved to stand beneath a tree or to wonder for quite so long. We all tried to guess what the tree had witnessed in its lifetime? It has to close to 300 years old. Pioneers, farmers, country gentlemen and now Arboretum visitors have all passed its reach.

We grasped hands and the kids were thrilled that we couldn’t reach all the way around the trunk. We still talk about that day and our experience with that old Bur oak tree. I am honored to have given it a hug and to have shared that moment with my family. To us, that will always be “our” private piece of the Arboretum.
