This week, in spite of a strong performance by Judge Sonia Sotomayor before Senate Judiciary and the nation, Republican leaders have decided to delay her confirmation. Without acknowledging her qualifications and providing a smooth confirmation process, Senators within the GOP have decided to delay the confirmation and continue attacks on her character instead of focusing on her 17 years of judicial experience which proves her strict adherence to the law.
Interestingly, Republicans once ran the nomination process by far different standards, but today they are committed to delaying the confirmation for seven consecutive days. Take Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) who back in January 2006, in defense of Samuel Alito, stated that it was unfair for Senators to cite 2 or 3 cases to claim that Alito always ruled for one side, while ignoring all other cases. This week, Kyl announced he will vote against Judge Sotomayor because of his concern she may be biased and because of her role in the Ricci decision (New Haven firefighters’ case).
In spite of the hypocritical stances and statements from many GOP leaders, the public display of bipartisan support is undeniable. In this historic confirmation, Republicans must see that their duty is to choose the best candidate for our nation’s Supreme Court- Judge Sonia Sotomayor: an advocate not of race, religion, or gender, but an advocate of justice and commitment to the law. Encourage your Senator to invoke the boldness of Senator Graham, who in the face of opposition by his own party stated:
“I understand the path of least resistance for me personally would be to vote no. That is probably true anytime you are in the minority party and you lose an election, but I feel compelled to vote yes, and I feel this is the right vote for me and, quite frankly, for the country in this case.” - Senator Lindsay Graham upon announcing his support of Judge Sotomayor
