Caribbean all-inclusive resorts offer off-season deals to rival shore
Apple Vacations has a vested interest in telling summer travelers they can vacation cheaper in the Caribbean than they can at the shore. But the company might have a point.
As part of a campaign titled “The Shore Without the Chores,” Apple Vacations has prepared a chart listing average expenses incurred during a week at the shore compared to those incurred at a Caribbean resort. According to Apple, a week’s stay at a very nice all-inclusive resort this summer could cost a family of four as little as $3,000 (plus around $400-450 in taxes). In contrast, Apple estimates the same family would spend $6,700 if they stayed in a three-bedroom rental property within a block of the beach.
Included in Apple’s cost breakdown are transportation (none for the shore, although gas should be factored in, and airfare to the Caribbean or Mexico), accommodations, three meals a day, drinks and snacks, entertainment and water sports. In addition, Apple lists the chores that parents provide at the shore — cooking, cleaning and kid supervision — and notes that they’re taken care of by the resort.
The only cost that I could easily double-check was the cost of a three-bedroom rental property, which Apple lists as $3,800. I did find some rates as low as $1,200 in a Maryland beach town, but I also found some around $3,800 and higher in New Jersey. One might argue that comparing a three-bedroom house or condo with a room at a resort isn’t fair. But nothing in the chart can be an exact comparison. For example, the food at an all-inclusive is all-you-can-eat with a wide selection. That might not be how a family eats every day at the shore. And the cost of passports isn’t mentioned.
So interpret Apple’s results however you want, but you will find some terrific bargains at fancy resorts this summer because it’s off-season in the Caribbean and Mexico, meaning rates are lower than they are during the winter months. News reports have scared off travelers from venturing into Mexico, but the violence isn’t occurring anywhere near most of the popular resort areas.
On the day we checked for specials, Apple was offering a seven-night “Square Deal” to Jamaica on five departure dates in July with prices starting at $899 plus about $115 in taxes per person, based on two people sharing a room. The rate included roundtrip airfare from Philadelphia, a standard room in a five red-apple-rated all-inclusive resort (to be assigned by Apple), all meals, drinks, entertainment and tips. Apple rates properties from one to six apples, with six apples being the highest.
