“It definitely was sophisticated,” said Venizelos, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division.On a scale of one to 10, “I’d put it at a seven,” he said.
The violent group’s crime spree lasted nearly four years and netted more than $577,000, U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith said in announcing the gang’s “dismantling” Thursday.
Sometimes, the robbers wore high-grade, perhaps even theatrical-quality, full-head silicone “old man masks” to carefully cloak their identities, Smith said.
They always terrified the tellers and customers they encountered as they hit banks in Dauphin, Cumberland and Lebanon counties and in Williamsport, he said.
When they got nothing during a July 2010 robbery of a Dauphin-area bank, they hit that same bank again four months later, the second time stealing more than $108,000.
On successive days in December, robbers hit the same Susquehanna Bank branch in Harrisburg, stealing a total of $70,608.
Seven of the suspects are in custody. Two, Danyel Proctor, 38, and Darrell Dewayne Fears, 32, are still at large.
Robert Stewart, 43; Curtis Hall, 24; Jamar Edward Hinds, 23; and Jonathan Colon-Rivera, 23, were arrested without incident Wednesday, Venizelos said. Smith said Derrick Ryan Jackson, 21; Miguel Angel Rosario, 33; and Martinel Lamar Hill, 30, were arrested in late February and early March.
A grand jury indictment filed in U.S. Middle District Court in Harrisburg lists charges against the men that include bank robbery and using firearms during a crime of violence was recently unsealed.
Jackson, Rosario, Hill, Proctor and Hall could face life prison sentences if convicted of participating in the armed robberies, Smith said. He said Stewart and Hinds would face up to 20 years behind bars, while Fears and Colon-Rivera are looking at possible 3-year jail terms if convicted.
“These charges are extremely serious,” Smith said. The investigation is continuing, and he did not rule out the possibility that more charges will be filed in other as-yet-unsolved area bank robberies.
