68-year-old graduates from Gwinnett Tech

Tamplin decided to return to school and enrolled at Gwinnett Technical College in Lawrenceville. About a week ago, she graduated with an associate degree in hotel, restaurant and tourism management — at the age of 68.

“My momma never stopped going to school. ... She taught us you’re never too old to learn,” Tamplin said. “This time around when I went to school, I got more from it than all the other times I’ve been. I know the value of an education. I know the value of learning. I value it because of my age.”

Tamplin graduated from a South Carolina high school in 1961. She then went to Allen University on a musical scholarship, but she fell in love with a man named Jimmy Walker — “not the ugly Jimmy Walker on TV, but a handsome Jimmy Walker,” she said.

Tamplin didn’t return to the university after her freshman year. She married Walker, had two boys and became a stay-at-home mom. When the family moved to California, Tamplin got a job at the Hillcrest Country Club in Beverly Hills as a switchboard operator.

When Tamplin and Walker got divorced, she moved back to the East Coast. She began a job as a file clerk at Pacific Indemnity Insurance Company. She also went back to college and received an associate degree in general business.

After moving to the Atlanta area in 1978, Tamplin began working for General Motors on the assembly line.

“I was making beaucoups of money, working with the guys, wearing jeans and I loved it,” she said. “But my brain was hungry.”

So Tamplin searched out classes, taking a course here and there to satisfy her intellectual needs. She also had her third son.

In 1988, Tamplin took a buyout and retired from General Motors. She lived off her retirement for a while, but eventually found another assembly line job making contact lenses. After nine years there, the company downsized, and she resigned.

Finally, Tamplin ended up at National Allergy Supply, where she said she found her niche serving people. She worked in customer service, a job she said she found satisfying.

“I love to be in a service place, serving and helping people,” she said.

Now armed with another associate degree and certification in hospitality and tourism, Tamplin said she’s searching for another job.

“I don’t want to retire,” she said. “I want to work. ... I’m not afraid of challenges.
