Exploring the Lawson legend
While some may only know him from the old $10 note, there are many who have cherished the tales of drovers and bushmen penned by one of Australia’s most famous poets, Henry Lawson.
You can learn all about the journey that inspired much of his poetry when Peter Brunton, acting curator of the Mitchell Library, visits Lismore for a special talk discussing that perilous adventure Lawson made in 1892.
The Mitchell Library contains historical texts, photos and films relating to NSW’s history, and Paul will be bringing along a selection of original manuscripts, photographs and a copy of Lawson’s first book published by his mother.
Lismore Library’s Lucy Kinsley said Lawson rose to the status of Australian literary legend despite a tragic personal life of alcoholism, marital breakdown and poverty.
“Few writers have captured the imagination of Australians as did Henry Lawson,” Lucy said. “His harrowing journey through the drought-affected west of New South Wales in 1892 was a seminal event in his life and supplied him with experiences which would inform his writing for years.
“His death brought forth national mourning usually reserved only for heads of state. He was the first writer to be given a State funeral.”
This free talk will be held at Goonellabah Community Centre on Wednesday, June 15, at 6.30pm. Refreshments will be provided. RSVP is essential by June 13 to 6621 2464.
