New consumer electronics retailer bets on South Florida

South Florida consumers shopping for a high definition television or a refrigerator will now have an additional choice.

A new player in the consumer electronics industry is making a major market push: hhgregg will open 10 stores over the next week stretching from Jensen Beach to Pinecrest, including Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Aventura and Hialeah. Soft openings of individual stores will begin this weekend, with an official grand opening scheduled for July 14.

Another three Miami-Dade locations are in the works for next year. Homestead is already a lock and the company is searching for locations in Kendall and Doral.

“We’re going to blanket the market,” said Dennis May, chief executive officer, who visited South Florida to survey the region this week. “We like to enter a market with a full advertising share of voice and to do that efficiently, we need to enter a market with enough strength. We like to advertise aggressively and let consumers know we’re here. To do that, you have to be convenient to the consumer.”

The company, which was started in 1955 in Indianapolis by Henry Harold Gregg and his wife Fansy, will have 185 stores counting the South Florida openings. Nationally, hhgregg has been on an aggressive expansion push, opening 109 stores over the last five years and breaking $2 billion in revenue for the first time last year. Despite the expansion, it still has a long way to go to reach the same sales as industry leader Best Buy, which counts $50 billion in revenue.

hhgregg’s focus is on regional strip shopping centers with easy access for its customers, who skew toward a female demographic. At an average of 30,000-square-foot, shoppers can get a quick view of the entire store, which is smaller than the competition.

Most of the store is devoted to the home theater and appliance markets, which together represent about 80 percent of the chain’s business. But you’ll still find an ample selection of consumer electronics including computers, digital cameras and cellphones, plus a surprise category: mattresses. What you won’t find is music or movies or a huge stash of video games.

May vows that South Florida consumers will find product and pricing that’s comparable to his competitors. Where hhgregg hopes to differentiate itself is based on the strength of its customer service. The concept is touted in its new national advertising campaign, called “We Help,” that kicked off in May created by Zimmerman Advertising of Fort Lauderdale.
