"So You Think You Can Dance" 2011: Top 20 Perform (AGAIN)
"Dance" got to a bit of a late start tonight because of the President's speech about Afghanistan. I was actually psyched (I know, I'm weird) because I thought I'd have to choose between the two. But people on Facebook and Twitter got their panties in a twist. I love "Dance" as much as the rest of you, but quit your bitchin' folks! Whether you agree with him or not, this is important. And it's only 15 minutes of your life. You'll survive.
This show was worth the wait. Not all the dancing was spectacular (more on that in a minute), but between nip slips, bloody noses, and feathers galore, I wasn't sure where Nigel was taking us next on this crazy journey. The stakes were incredibly high Wednesday night as FOUR dancers will be eliminated this week. All I can say is, the judges better not wuss out this week. Cat looked like a lacey banana tonight. The top sort of reminded me of a tacky version of Kate Middleton's wedding dress. You're better than that, Cat.
This week's guest judge was a vast improvement on last week's panel - Debbie effing Reynolds! All hail the queen! She was decked out in a lavender sparkly pantsuit, but you know what, she's a legend. She can wear whatever she wants. And they played a clip from "Singin' in the Rain." Love. It.
This week the dancers were sharing embarrassing secrets about their partners. Yay, gossip! Hairy-legged Ryan and Ricky "Roderick" got a Mandy Moore jazz routine. The punchy routine was set to "Addicted to Love" by Robbert Palmer. Ryan was pulling her face all over - licking her lips and gyrating her hips. It felt like they were trying too hard. The pair also struggled with the series of lifts - badly. And what was with the costumes? Ryan's poodle hairdo was nuts and Ricky was wearing a half-corset and suspenders. Ridiculous! Oh, and did I mention Ryan nearly fell out of her outfit? And Nigel called it "spectacular." NO! I almost hurled my Diet Coke at the TV screen. I hope they land in the bottom tomorrow.
Even the first commercial break had dance in it with the trailer for the new "Footloose" movie. I loved the original, so I don't know how I feel about the remake. It looked like a bad student film mixed with "Step Up." Sometimes, I think it's best not to mess with a classic. But we'll save the full judgment ‘til the movie comes out.
In a Stacey Tookey contemporary routine, Caitlynn was desperately trying to leave her relationship with Mitchell, but had trouble getting away. The number, set to "Turning Tables" by Adele (love!) was easily one of the strongest of the night. Caitlynn killed it! The choreography centered around two armchairs - one black, one white. Stacey played with levels very well: when Caitlynn popped up and felt like she could escape, Mitchell was collapsed and vice versa. The highlight by far was when Caitlynn lept off the chair and collapsed into Mitchell's arms. Lovely. You could see the struggle of the story. The pair nailed the lifts and apparently Mitchell nailed Caitlynn in the face. I didn't even realize she had been injured until Cat said "Dr. Deeley" was in the house. I hope she didn't break anything! They deserve to move on to next week's show.
