Maricopa teen's essay wins youth center $2500 award
Foster – an intern for the youth center – took first place in Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort’s Essay Parlay contest and earned the center $2,500 to help with its operating costs. Besides the $2.500 main prize, the youth center will receive an additional $500 a year for the next three years, bringing the total to $4,000. The essay Foster – who took over the essay after other youth center members could not finish it – wrote was approximately 500 words and outlined how the funding would help the center, which Foster wrote would go toward the following items: Purchasing new equipment for fitness classes; a cash register for the center’s snack bar Foster said was “very needed”; to pay for a photography instructor to teach advanced and basic photo classes and for the center’s various end of the month activities. For the latter two items, youth center program coordinator Priscilla Behnke said the money Foster won will help the center offset recent funding reductions and allow the center to continue to provide the photo classes for the near future, which she said was in doubt before.
