Rebekka Bakken brings her blend of folkish jazz to Northern Cyprus
Released in late 2009, “Morning Hours” is her latest CD and her first album recorded in the US. Bakken introduces more of a folkish sound on this album, but she also perfectly adds contrasting colors from her native Norway into her works.
On a beautiful summer night at this year’s Mağusa (Famagusta) International Culture and Art Festival in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC), Bakken prepares to present her songs to Cypriots in the enchanting atmosphere of the ancient theater of Salamis, where she and Balkan jazz sensation Lena Kovacevic will present back-to-back gigs.
Before she takes to the stage on Thursday, Bakken speaks about her music, her songs and herself as a songwriter in an interview with Today’s Zaman:
Your music has a Scandinavian flavor, but the feel of your most recent album, “Morning Hours,” suggests that you are a folk singer from America. How would you describe your own music?
I try not to describe music, whether it is my own or not. Music is to be experienced, not observed, so when it comes to music that touches me, there is no way for me to do so. When I write music myself, I do not think about how it sounds, what it is or where it comes from. I usually describe my music as “singer-songwriter” style, which pretty much allows anything. I am aware that my songs can be placed within the American folk tradition and I find that interesting myself. I loved recording my music in the US as I find that the musical settings there allow my music to be expressed in the spirit of how I wrote it. But I am not sure at all if this has to do with nationality. The language of music is universal and that is something I discover again and again.
You are a Norwegian artist who also lived in New York City and Vienna. When you write your own songs, which city inspires you the most?
I have always written a lot of music, no matter where I was in the world. I wrote a lot of music in New York and a lot of music in Vienna. However, I now alternate between living part of the time far out in the countryside and going to New York, which always fills me up with inspiration. It is a fantastic city for that.
Your lyrics feel so personal but you say that they are not about your personal experiences. Are there any exceptions in which you talk about your own life?
There is definitely a mix. A real life occurrence can inspire me, but once I start writing a song, it takes its own life and form and I can no longer say it has much to do with reality. It is always an exciting process to write. It usually leaves me surprised and often entertained by its outcome!
