A Pinch Of Salt
This whole reliving the days of my youth thing is starting to get downright painful.
I think I’ve mentioned before how as a young whippersnapper right out of college I became a bit of a mountain man. I moved into the San Juans in south-central Colorado and actually made a living for a while with a logging company, then a mining company before finding someone willing to actually pay me to write.
A key to that life was wood — specifically, firewood. I heated a succession of three houses solely with wood-burning stoves, and my three-quarter ton pick-em-up truck with stock racks and my 24-inch Husqvarna chainsaw were nearly as dear to me as my dog (I’d say wife, but I know better).
I eventually put those days in the rear-view mirror and returned to my city roots. I drove wannabe sports cars and motorcycles instead of trucks, and thermostats took the place of kindling and air-flow controllers.
But I must admit, one of the items that tipped the scale in favor of my north Long Beach home was its fireplace. It wasn’t a fake fireplace, or a natural gas fireplace, it was the real deal. I’m not too sure how often it had been used in the years between 1947, when it was built, and 2000, when I bought it, but it has seen plenty of use since.
For most of that time, I’ve done the city thing and bought the firewood. The company delivers it already split, and the most I’ve had to do is restack it in the wood shack I cobbled together.
But a couple of years ago, a neighbor down the street decided to take out a big pine tree. It was still alive, but it had grown to the point it overwhelmed the bungalow-style home.
Instead of hauling the wood away as it was cut, he let it be known it was there for the taking, at least for a week or so. Maria and I spent a day — and ruined a cheap plastic wheelbarrow — hauling logs down the street and into my back yard.
For you city folk, green wood doesn’t burn, and it takes a good two or three years for logs to dry out naturally. This Fourth of July marked year three, and I was looking forward to tackling the woodpile.
While the wood was free, it wasn’t cut into fireplace lengths. So I trotted down to Home Depot to rent a chainsaw (the Husky had been sold lifetimes ago). I opted for a 16-inch electric Mikita — a totally different breed. Husqvarna is a Swedish company, and Sweden knows about trees. Mikita is, I think, Japanese. A 24-inch blade can cut a manly tree — 16-inch blades are the paring knives of the chainsaw world. And electric? Chainsaws are smoke-belching, gasoline powered things.
