Acetone will indeed remove most any nail polish from most any thing. Of course, acetone is such a powerful solvent, that it can also dissolve the item you’re trying to clean. For this reason, a trial on a small, inconspicuous area of the stain is ESSENTIAL. Some answerers did recommend nail polish remover, while others recommended other solvents that may work with nail polish. Still others mixed the nail polish remover with water or other reasonable things, partly to dilute the effect of the acetone. I commend them all: they get a gold star!

They will not penetrate to the carpet backing while being used to treat the stain. This pro will then rinse/extract the stain and solution from the carpet. This works best if the pro makes the first and only attempt at removing the nail polish. The do it your selfer will move the stain down deep with the acetone solvent, and in doing so, will damage the carpet backing by softening it. If the stain appears to be permanent, you will have to have another pro, a carpet installer, patch in a piece of carpet taken from a closet. This closet then can be re carpeted with a small remnant of similar style and color. I am also a pro.
