Moths, European hornets and the unpleasant summer insects

Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon and Thoosa, was a Cyclops in Greek mythology. This name means round eye, and is shared by a giant silk moth.

Named after the mythical creature, the Antheraea polyphemus moth possesses two large eye spots on the hind wings. This big beauty flies at night and is big enough to be confused with a bat. With a wingspan up to 5 1/2 inches it can even be mistaken for a bird. The brown underside is for camouflage when it is at rest so it looks like bark or dead leaves. When disturbed, the moth flashes the huge eyespots to scare away what ever is bothering it. Found usually in the forest it also can be seen in marshes and parks.

When I was in my teens we watched for them under streetlights. They start appearing in May to search for a mate. The female lays three to five eggs under a leaf. Once the egg hatches and the caterpillar starts eating, it grows to a big caterpillar molting several times. Once mature, they spin a cocoon and the cycle starts all over. Not being able to eat keeps their time finding a mate short. To help in this process the female emits a scent that the male can detect up to a mile away.

To help in finding her, the male has a large, feathery antenna. So if you see one of these moths, look at the antenna; males are feathery, and females are narrow. Look around your porch light. I do every morning, and that is where I found one to photograph.

May also starts the season for European hornets. These are the hornets that resemble a yellowjacket on steroids. Think I'm kidding? They can grow up to 1 1/4 inch long. Nesting in the woods usually they sometimes make their nests in attics or hollow walls of our homes. The unique thing about these hornets is they will fly at night. Sometimes they will fly into lighted windows at night with a pretty hard force. They aren't trying to get in, they are just attracted to lights.

Docile in nature, they do sting and will attack if you get too close to the nest. To avoid any contact, stay out of the flight paths, and mind how close you get to the nest. If by some chance you have a nest in your house walls do not seal the entrance. They will chew their way out. I know this to be a fact as a friend of mine did just that, and they chewed through the ceiling into his house. This is a beneficial insect, as they aid with insect control, so they should be left alone if not causing a problem.

Well something else that comes with warm weather is ticks, mosquitoes and deer flies. I can now say I have encountered all of them. Summer is here.
