Back home — after 142 years
Oscar Hult gets almost giddy when he talks about how some of the original furniture belonging to Thomas and Christine Monteith came back to Albany after a 142-year absence.
The furniture is on display in the Monteith House, 518 Second Ave. S.W.
Hult, the president of the Monteith Historical Society, said his reaction was —“Wow. This is amazing” — when he learned a number of pieces that had remained in the Monteith family all this time were about to make the trip home.
Newlyweds Thomas and Christine Monteith bought the furnishings in 1855 while on their honeymoon in Thomas’ native state of New York. They had their purchases shipped to Albany for their home built in 1849.
Last summer, Hult learned the pieces still existed when the Monteiths’ great-granddaughter, Joanna Vanderwilt, who lives near Tacoma, sent her daughter, Janet, on a reconnaissance mission to go through the old family house to see if it would be a suitable spot for her to donate some of the family’s furniture.
“What Janet saw must have pleased Joanna because Janet called later to say her mother would be donating quite a bit to the house,” he said.
Last November, Hult, Rusty VanRossman, Jason Bond and Jacob Bond rented a trailer and brought the things back to Albany.
“I kept thinking when we were traveling down I-205 that the cargo in the back of our U-Haul had made this same trip around the falls at Oregon City 155 years before,” Hult said. “Inside the trailer were pieces still in remarkable condition.”
Returning to the house was Thomas and Christine’s walnut bedroom suite, consisting of a bed, chest of drawers and a nightstand a mirror. The set is adorned with carvings of nuts and a Union shield.
“Thomas was very much a Union man during the Civil War,” Hult said. “He was a colonel in the Oregon Militia. A folding, upholstered campaign chair he used in the field while on his official duties also was returned.”
And so were a gaming table, Christine’s personal writing desk, her sewing rocker, a child’s rocker, a tall étagère, dolls and four side chairs.
“I hope to get the chairs reupholstered in black horse hair, but that’s expensive and only one loom in England does that type of work anymore,” he said.
The donation “has made a huge difference in the way the house looks and feels,” Hult said. “To think that Thomas and Christine used this furniture right here in this house 150 years ago really makes me feel like I know them better.
