Tales of Alluring Westport

Important as decision makers, says Grey, were the schools, property taxes and the amenities of Westport, “a fabulous library, great theater, and a public golf course, which was quite egalitarian. When a real estate agent drove us through Longshore Club Park, we said, ‘Yes, this is it.’ My husband plays golf, and I play a lot of tennis. I spent a summer three years ago doing the sailing program down at the sailing school.” Grey gives credit to their daughter, who was then in seventh grade, and a friend for finding their present house in a great neighborhood with friendly neighbors. “We spend every Sunday night during warm weather down at the beach with other friends having a barbecue,” says Grey. “We get together at parties all through the year. It’s just a wonderful place.” During their search, the couple spent one night each in Old Greenwich, New Canaan and Westport, where they stayed at the Inn at Longshore. “We awoke the next morning at Longshore and realized that I can play tennis all summer for free with a handpass. We can play golf for $18 each, and we’re right on the water. We looked at each other and said, ‘This is a no-brainer.’ The town just felt so welcoming.” Alger wasn’t living in Westport very long before she was subbing in tennis games at the Sylvan Tennis Club. “I had little cards made with my phone and e-mail information, and every time I subbed I gave out cards. All of a sudden, I’m getting calls for all these tennis games. A few weeks into it, my husband said, ‘I don’t know a soul in town, and you’ve got a million tennis games going on every week. You must know a lot of people who play tennis. How did this happen?’ Right now, without even thinking, I can give you a list of 50 women who play tennis in Westport.” Although Alger plays tennis four days a week year-round, she also volunteers one day a week at Project Return, where she is facile on the computer and does data base work in the office, organizational mailings, and helps with fundraising. “Last fall I had a little lunch and raised $7,500 for them. Even my friends from New York City sent checks. It was so nice they were very touched by this organization which helps teenage girls and young women in crisis,” says Alger. “I just knew Westport would be the right place to live,” she said.
