CHS Receives Salt-Water Aquarium

Members of the Washington Area Marine Aquarium Society (WAMAS) recently donated a 90-gallon, salt-water aquarium to Chantilly High’s Oceanography class.

Former Chantilly student and WAMAS member Josh Langland heard about a tank needing a new home and connected his teacher and WAMAS President Doug Arthur, an electrical engineer. Other members of the WAMAS team who set up the tank included Dan and Dean Castro, Rob Gillette, Dave Lin and Eric Wendling.

Part of WAMAS’ goal is "to further understanding of the oceans and ocean life by providing education on the current status of the world's coral reefs and ongoing research in the scientific community regarding coral reefs." Toward that end, WAMAS often assists local educators by providing resources to help them teach students about oceans and their marine life.

"Besides including the tank and all the necessary equipment to operate it, WAMAS also provided a host of live coral and fish," said Gerbasi. "We thank WAMAS for this extraordinary gift. For years, it will provide hundreds of students with a window into our beloved world of coral reefs.

There is no distinctive tank setup. Marine saltwater aquarium comes in a range of shapes and size. However, it is the shape of the tank, not the volume that influences the surface area. Therefore, where two tanks have identical volumes, they may not have the same surface area depending on their shape. A tank setup that is slender and tall will not get a decent rate of gas exchange. The best design would be one that is short and wide.

Once you have chosen your saltwater aquarium, it is time to start thinking about its residents. Of course, the dimensions of your tank are going to determine how many fish and invertebrates it can store. The main thing to avoid in your tank setup is to many fish. Too many inhabitants and your saltwater aquarium filtration system will be overloaded. Fish living in cramped conditions are stressed and this can lead to a short lifespan.
