CHS Receives Salt-Water Aquarium

Members of the Washington Area Marine Aquarium Society (WAMAS) recently donated a 90-gallon, salt-water aquarium to Chantilly High’s Oceanography class.

Former Chantilly student and WAMAS member Josh Langland heard about a tank needing a new home and connected his teacher and WAMAS President Doug Arthur, an electrical engineer. Other members of the WAMAS team who set up the tank included Dan and Dean Castro, Rob Gillette, Dave Lin and Eric Wendling.

Part of WAMAS’ goal is "to further understanding of the oceans and ocean life by providing education on the current status of the world's coral reefs and ongoing research in the scientific community regarding coral reefs." Toward that end, WAMAS often assists local educators by providing resources to help them teach students about oceans and their marine life.

"Besides including the tank and all the necessary equipment to operate it, WAMAS also provided a host of live coral and fish," said Gerbasi. "We thank WAMAS for this extraordinary gift. For years, it will provide hundreds of students with a window into our beloved world of coral reefs.

The kind of saltwater aquarium arrangement you choose depends on a few elements. For Instant, the types of fish you want to include, the space you have available, and your budget. Overall, you will want to buy an affordable saltwater aquarium arrangement that will nicely fit into your existing environment.

The reason for this is so your fish and additional animals can have the maximum well-being possible as they develop. The fish and other invertebrates that you select to stock your Saltwater Aquarium with need plenty of space to navigate and develop, receiving enough oxygen to survive. When you choose a saltwater aquarium system, remember that these main features are determined mainly by the magnitude of the tank.

Now, let us talk about the oxygen component of a saltwater aquarium arrangement. The quantity of oxygen in the water relates to the saltwater aquarium inner area. This means the quantity of area on the saltwater aquarium surface that’s’ exposed to the air. The bigger the surface area of your tank setup, the more room there is for the exchange of oxygen to occur at the surface.

The more oxygen that is able to go into the saltwater aquarium, and the more damaging gases like carbon dioxide are permissible to leave, the better your tank setup will be. Its temperature also influences the oxygen content of the water. Overall, the warmer the water, the lower the oxygen level will be.

Marine species from the tropics, there waters is 75 degrees or higher, so this means that less oxygen is going to be available. This is when it becomes essential to increase the surface of the saltwater aquarium by making sure your tank setup is as large as possible.

There is no distinctive tank setup. Marine saltwater aquarium comes in a range of shapes and size. However, it is the shape of the tank, not the volume that influences the surface area. Therefore, where two tanks have identical volumes, they may not have the same surface area depending on their shape. A tank setup that is slender and tall will not get a decent rate of gas exchange. The best design would be one that is short and wide.

Once you have chosen your saltwater aquarium, it is time to start thinking about its residents. Of course, the dimensions of your tank are going to determine how many fish and invertebrates it can store. The main thing to avoid in your tank setup is to many fish. Too many inhabitants and your saltwater aquarium filtration system will be overloaded. Fish living in cramped conditions are stressed and this can lead to a short lifespan.
