Frenzied Foxboro fans feel the 'Love' for Swift

Alk about girl power. Pop-country phenom Taylor Swift kept a sold-out crowd of cowboy-hat-wearing, glowstick-toting devotees at Gillette Stadium spellbound last night, tightening her iron grip on music with each note.

The two-hour performance, the first of two sellout shows at the stadium, saw Swift transitioning from innocent pop-country princess to hair-whipping diva with a mean strut to go along with her soul-baring catalogue. The 17-song set featured eight wardrobe changes, a fleet of backup dancers, a live band and an elaborate stage setup that included a bridge, gazebo, enchanted forest, snowflake-filled dream world during “Back to December” and a fireworks display during “Dear John” and the show’s closer, “Love Story.”

Swift’s tales of young love, heartbreak and self-discovery have certainly captured an ever-growing base of fans, who seem to achieve a form of self-expression through their idol’s autobiographical tales.

With lyrics scrawled down her left arm and a “13” on her right hand, Swift maintained an air of humility and near-disbelief throughout the night, repeatedly pausing in between songs and seeming awestruck while crowd members screamed for the blond songstress. Her “aw, shucks” air quickly grew to seem scripted and forced.

In between switching dresses, singing in the rain about boys who have done her wrong and soaking up audience love, Swift played guitar, banjo, ukulele and piano. The 21-year-old mixed such tough-girl numbers as “Sparks Fly” and “Better Than Revenge” with more sensitive tracks including “Mine,” “Mean” and “You Belong With Me,” which found her galloping across the stage in the rain as the crowd sang the words back to her.

“I’ll never forget the night I saw 52,000 people dancing in the rain,” Swift said, again seeming surprised by the turnout. Make that 55,000, but who’s counting?

The lineup of three opening acts seemed unnecessary. James Wesley and Randy Montana each brought acoustic melodies and frequent shout-outs to Swift. South Carolina band Needtobreathe delivered country-rock with dark undertones. Lead singer Bear Rinehart sang through a megaphone at one point in a Chris Daughtry-esque move, but the audience didn’t seem particularly interested. Mostly, fans utilized the time to do the wave and chant “Tay-lor.
