Made in NY Awards honors Sidney Lumet, John Leguizamo, Matt Damon and others
&Nbsp;Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver hosted the 6th Annual Made in NY Awards at the Gracie Mansion in New York City. Each year this awards show honors individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to New York City’s entertainment industry.
Director Sidney Lumet was presented with the first-ever “Made in NY” Mayor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement. The four-time Oscar nominee sadly passed away from Lymphoma in April, so his daughter Jenny accepted the award on his behalf.
The other 2011 Made in NY honorees were Academy Award winner Matt Damon, location-based mobile platform foursquare, actor John Leguizamo who is currently starring on Broadway in “Ghetto Klown,” founder of the Urbanworld Film Festival & CEO of MoviePass Stacy Spikes, commercial production company Smuggler and Lauren Zalaznick, chairman, NBC Universal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media.
One socialite who should win a New York award just for visiting it so frequently, Celebrity Magnet Tom Murro, made his rounds at the event where he ran into the executive of Bravo programming and TV personality Andy Cohen. The two posed for a picture and started to chat about Murro’s best friend and partner-in-crime Kim Granatell, also known as Kim G on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, who couldn’t attend the event since she was at a jewelry show in Las Vegas. Cohen made a remark asking if there was really a market for Kim G. Murro relayed this message to his fellow housewife and she did what every celebrity does best, express themselves through Twitter. An exchange of argumentative Tweets ensued shortly after, can you say #BravoBrawl?
Speaking of a night of housewives, Murro spent time with “The Real Housewives of New York.” Jill Zarin seemed to want to chat it up about Kim G as well; seems Kim G was a hot topic of the night. Zarin asked if Kim G took a private plane, or as
she says "PP," to Vegas. “I said no, she flies first class and would rather spend the 40k on jewelry,” said Murro.
Murro had a great time posing for pics with the “NY Housewives,” Mayor Bloomberg, Matt Damon, and John Leguizamo, they don’t call him the CelebrityMagnet for nothing! Besides the intense Twitter battle that went down between two Bravo buddies, the night was an overall success. Made in NY did its job once again this year recognizing and celebrating the productions that occur in locations all over the entertainment capital of the world — New York!

Among other things, the event at Gracie Mansion featured a Leguizamo joke about Rep. Anthony Weiner , speeches by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Katherine Oliver , commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment, and, ahead of this Sunday's Tony Awards, a performance by members of last year's Tony winner Memphis .
Leguizamo opened the ceremony by warming up the crowd with some jokes. Among other punch lines, he told the crowd that there would be no official photo lines for photos with Mayor Bloomberg. "If you want, I'll tweet you some of Anthony Weiner's stuff," Leguizamo quipped. After a round of laughs, he added: "Relax, we are New Yorkers. Nothing shocks us anymore."
The Made in NY Mayor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement, with the award accepted by the director’s daughter, screenwriter Jenny Lumet . "I haven't spoken about Dad in public yet," she told the crowd in one of the evening's emotional moments. "I miss him."
Bloomberg introduced Damon to much applause, but told the crowd that he had taken time out of his busy schedule to shoot a scene for Damon's The Adjustment Bureau . After smiling, waving and saying his lines, the mayor said he couldn't wait for the DVD release - only to find out his scene was cut short.
"It turns out my whole scene is seven seconds," he said to laughs. "So, if you were in the theater and the popcorn line was long," people missed his big scene completely. Asking Damon to step up to the podium, Bloomberg quipped: "Matt, you got seven seconds!"
Damon thanked Bloomberg and Oliver for their commitment to the creative industries. "Thanks for bringing movies here so robustly," he said.
Damon also recalled when he and his friend Ben Affleck , who grew up in Boston, would come to NY to audition on their own dime when they were younger. "Our dream was...to actually some day get a movie some day that shot in New York," he said.
Now he has done a few films here and is raising his children here, Damon said in professing his love for the Big Apple. "I wish they were here tonight, but they are sleeping," he said about his kids. "I'm just so proud to live here."
The city officials also underlined the city's entertainment strength.
