Couple Spending Retirement with Mule Trips to Enjoy Country's Sights
That night, Marilyn invited John to a local benefit and things developed between the two from there. Although, John was en route to Phoenix, Ariz., when he met Marilyn, she said the two maintained contact, and a short time later, John invited her to Tennessee to attend a two week wagon ride. Marilyn said while the circumstances of their meeting are unusual, the two have continued to enjoy mini trips throughout the year in addition to their annual summer get-away. John said on average they travel 20 miles per day. Setting up and loading the camper, Marilyn said, takes around one and a half hours, but that the two try to locate a new campsite around noon each day, and weather permitting, continue their journey around 6 a.m. the following day. The purpose of the short travel days, John explained, is to avoid overworking the mules and because of the summer heat. Marilyn said their top two concerns on each stop are finding the local laundromat and fresh water for themselves, the mules and their blue heeler. Before reaching Hamburg, Marilyn said the two crossed the Mississippi, White, and Arkansas Rivers when they first started rising out of their banks and were in their camper when tornadoes touched down nearby. "The wind blew really, really hard and it rained so hard it blew rain into the camper," she said, adding she could not recall the name of the city they were in at the time. Traveling by wagon is not John's first taste for adventure. Marilyn explained that in his younger days, John was a hobby pilot and enjoyed skydiving and donkey ball. When asked, John explained that donkey ball is simply basketball that is played while the players are riding a donkey. Marilyn said John, who was born and raised in Pennsylvania, is a retired licensed electrician and plumber. John said he also worked in construction prior to retirement.Blue Heelers Middle Tennessee - News
