WRUP: In praise of protests edition

Protests are a wonderful thing. In the context of MMOs, protests are a great way to let developers know how unhappy you are with the current state of the game. Unfortunately, there's only really one way to make such a protest effectively: cancelling your subscription and encouraging others to do the same. A mass gathering of players shouting in protest on the servers is mostly sending the message that when the company screws up, players will be right there to continue paying a subscription fee in order to complain. Luckily for you, WRUP isn't protesting anything. Instead, we're just talking about what the Massively staff will be playing this weekend. And for this week's bonus, we're also discussing how many chances a game has to hook us. So jump on past the break to check in on our activities for the next couple of days, and let us know what you'll be up to in the comments! I give a game several chances. Several. If the game sticks around for a while, logic would have it that it will be patched and fixed up over time. So my later experience could be totally different than my earlier one. Plus, if we don't go back and try games from before, they might just be doomed. The key is to not take it personally when a game doesn't work out for you. You're not punishing the developers or the game by constantly smack-talking how it hurt you. It's a game... just like music it can take some time to grow on you. I often give old games a second chance. I can't think of a game that was really polished or deep enough to deserve play at launch, not one (not that they don't rope me in anyway). Over time, and depending on the vision of the live team, though, games either wind up with a ton of neat systems and content or they languish and tank. The former are often worth another trip or four, so I often find myself finally falling in love with an "old" game years after launch. Really, my top four or five MMOs all fit that bill. Most of the games that I've played seriously have been on-and-off affairs; I'll play a game for several months then drop it for a while then head back again. I don't really place a hard time-limit on something's hooking me, nor do I ever assume that I'm never going back to a game under any circumstances -- with a single exception. (It's not hard to guess that exception.) Even if I became bored with a game at one point, time heals all wounds and absence makes the heart grow fonder.
