Varsity football: Broggy steps down as Fox Lane coach

As he juggled family, teaching and lacrosse this spring, Bill Broggy's oldest daughter asked him this: "Daddy, can you believe I'm going into high school?"

The question was innocent, but one that sent Broggy's mind wandering.

"The next thing out of her mouth will be, 'Can you believe I'm going to college?' " he said.

With two growing daughters and his work commitments mounting, the 48-year-old Broggy realized it was time to focus on what mattered most to him. Late this spring, he decided that meant no longer coaching football at Fox Lane, where he resigned from his varsity post after 12 seasons with the Foxes.

Broggy said he will continue to coach girls lacrosse in the spring. Football had just become all-encompassing, and the dedication to it became a strain on his family life and his career at the high school, where he teaches Advanced Placement history courses.

"I just realized my family and teaching are important to me, and football was starting to impact those things," Broggy said. "Any coach knows quality family time just isn't there in the fall."

Broggy has known as much for more than half his life. After a stint as the junior varsity coach at Kennedy, he first became a head coach at Dover in 1987 at just 24 years old. He led the Dragons to two Section 1 titles, one of which sparked a run to the 1997 Class C state championship game.

At Fox Lane, Broggy's teams never won a sectional title but contended a handful of times, most notably in 2007, when the Foxes lost to Ossining in the Class A final.

Broggy was determined to return all winter. He hosted morning workouts in January and February, but he began to question himself in the spring.

"I just started thinking deeply about it," he said. "It was best for the kids (that I step down). It wouldn't be fair to them if I wasn't fully invested."

Fox Lane athletic director Beth Starpoli said the district is sorting through candidates as it begins the process of finding a replacement.

For four years, Fox Lane High School students have waited for prom night—a time to collectively celebrate their accomplishments and look forward to their futures.

Saturday night, students were dressed to the nines, some pulling up in super stretch limos, some dropped off by bus or car; some students came with dates, others with friends—but all arrived in style.
