Toys R Us draws a crowd as it opens doors to new store
Crowds of customers gathered around costumed characters, magicians, face painters and balloon animal makers as they explored the 47,000-square-foot store before heading to their final destination — the cash register.
New Jersey-based retail chain Toys “R” Us Inc. began working in December to relocate the store from the Westgate Crossing shopping center, where it had operated for 25 years, to the revamped Westgate Village shopping center at 1508 W.O. Ezell Blvd. in the former Circuit City space.
The store is part of a pilot program that combines the company's Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us concepts under one roof.
“We have been remodeling existing Toys “R” Us location to include Babies “R” Us store within the building since 2006 and currently operate more than 100 of these side-by-side stores across the country,” said Toys “R” Us spokeswoman Katelyn DeRogatis. “We're looking forward to providing Spartanburg-area customers with a streamlined shopping environment that is easy to navigate and best showcases the company's exclusive brand product offerings customer have come to expect.”
About 75 employees have been hired for the store so far.
Georgia-based Abernathy & Timberlake Investment Group has been working to revitalize the 35-year-old shopping center across from Dorman Centre, which was nearly abandoned a few years ago when Circuit City shuttered.
When the company acquired the center the tenant mix included an Office Depot, Dollar General and Jack in the Box.
Abernathy & Timberlake was able to lure Toys “R” Us and trendy discount apparel giant away from the nearby WestGate Crossing shopping center and convinced LongHorn Steakhouse to bring a restaurant back to Spartanburg.
“The new Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us location in Spartanburg at Westgate Village is the latest example of our strategy to bring both trusted brands under the same roof in one convenient location for our customers,” DeRogatis said.
Despite what the name implies, the store isn't just a toy outlet. It is stocked with everything from furniture to clothing and beyond. Customers expressed their satisfaction with the store.
“It's nice to see it so new and clean,” said Sherry Lollis, of Spartanburg, who attended the grand opening with her three daughters. “It will be much easier, especially at Christmas, because we can just come in and make a list in one place.
