The moon orbits the earth in the same direction that the earth rotates on its axis. Unlike the solar day (the time it takes the earth to rotate on its axis), which takes 24 hours, the lunar day (the time the moon takes to go around the earth) takes 24 hours and 50 minutes. It's the combination of the gravitational forces exerted by the moon and sun, and the rotation of the earth, that causes the rising and falling of the tides. Since the tides change twice a day each tidal cycle takes 12 hours and 25.5 minutes. Those extra 50 minutes-plus are the reason the tides don't occur at the same time each day. Another factor that comes into play are the phases of the moon. The highest, lowest and strongest tides occur on the full and new moons, when the sun, moon and earth form a line (know as syzygy) and the sun reinforces the moon's pull. This is know as a spring tide. When the moon is at first quarter and third quarter the sun and moon are separated by 90 degrees when viewed from the earth and the solar force partially cancels the moon's pull. The peak driving season or the hurricane season is over and heating oil season is not yet on us or by looking at weather derivatives traders are factoring in milder winter.
