Humboldt County resident brings hope to Japan

As Humboldt County residents prepared for a predicted tsunami on March 11, Japan's coastline was being inundated by a tsunami. Thick currents from the Pacific Ocean swept into Japanese cities, carrying houses, cars, boats and people with it. Almost three months later, the people of Japan are still digging through debris left by the tsunami, searching for the remains of their cities.

Humboldt County resident Fukiko Marshall, 71, grew up in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan. She lived in Japan for 23 years before attending school in Oakland and moved to Humboldt County in 1971. Since living in Humboldt, Marshall has successfully opened three Japanese restaurants: Sushi Tao, Hana Restaurant and Tomo Japanese Restaurant.

On April 10, Marshall went back to Japan for a high school reunion and decided to visit disaster zones to see the affected areas firsthand.

”I visited Minamisanriku-cho and participated with a volunteer group to cook hot food outside a shelter,” Marshall said. “I knew then, although they were glad that they survived, those evacuees were exhausted physically and mentally, facing the reality that they had lost everything -- not just their homes, but also their friends, family, their identities and their communities.”

She then flew back to Humboldt to figure out a way to help.

Marshall collected more than 200 letters and drawings symbolizing hope and encouragement from citizens all over Humboldt County. Schools and churches, such as Coastal Grove Charter School, Fieldbrook Elementary School, Stonebridge Montessori School, Mistwood Center for Education, Northcoast Preparatory and Performing Arts Academy and Faith Center Foursquare Church, and various Humboldt County citizens participated.

Before departing back to Japan, Marshall set up a stand at the Arcata Co-op and sold T-shirts and greeting cards designed by her husband, Orr Marshall, to raise money for the people of Japan. Through her efforts, Marshall managed to raise $4,255.

”I really appreciated that the people (of Humboldt County) trusted me and gave me the money,” Marshall said, explaining her intentions for the donated money was to put about $20 or so worth of yen in each card and hand them out as she met people affected by the disaster. “It's not much, but it's something so they can go buy something for themselves.”

On May 20, Marshall landed in Japan with the cards, drawings and donations in hand.
