Every now and then in one’s life, you are blessed to be in the presence of greatness. In my case, there have been many such occasions. My friend, football great John Mackey, was one of those men.

There will be many wonderful obituaries and glowing praise about his prowess on the field.  There will also be tributes from many who knew him personally.  I am one of those.

John and Sylvia were two of my and my late wife Mollie’s closest friends.  We met on many occasions at a little restaurant in Marina Del Ray that we all enjoyed.  Although I was connected with the NFL Players Association at the time, football was a minor part of our many discussions.

Most of the conversations turned to his son Kevin Mackey getting his civil engineer’s degree, or one of the beautiful Mackey girls following their mother Sylvia into the high world of fashion modeling.  Or the conversation would often turn to how my son Steven was doing at Pepperdine Law School, or how my daughter Lisa was doing in her budding career as a commercial artist.

Of course we talked football.  John would regale me with stories about how he chose Syracuse, because that’s where his idol Jim Brown, a fellow Long Island footballer, had made his name.  In high school, John wore number 44, which was also Jim’s number at Syracuse. When he got there, and the coach told him he couldn’t have that number because it had been Brown’s, John with his dry sense of humor, chose 88 explaining that he was he was going  to be twice as good as Jim was.

Please note, although the record states that he grew up in Long island, John often told me that his dad, a minister, had secreted the family out of the South just ahead of the Ku Klux Klan and impending disaster.

My friend John was a pioneer, not only on the football field where he revolutionized the role of the tight end, but in his everyday life.  John was the first president of the NFLPA. He also was the first African-American at any United States university to break the color barrier when he was inducted into the all-White Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, a moment, which John always considered among his favorite memories.

In this time of the NFL lockout, people forget that as the first NFLPA president he fought for, among other things, free agency, which he did so successfully. As a result, even though his playing days ended in 1972, it took 20 years for him to be enshrined in Canton’s Hall of Fame.  Although he never regretted anything he did on behalf of the players' union, he often told me that it was his belief his player advocacy had cost him the election.
