Golf Notebook: SA boys factor in Texas Mexico Cup victory
Several San Antonio-area players played key roles as the host team captured the championship at the fifth annual Texas Mexico Cup played this month at Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa.
The invitational event, pitting amateur golfers from the state and Mexico, follows a Ryder Cup format. Mexico had won the tournament the past two years, but the Texas boys, ages 16-18, won all their matches this month to wrest the crown.
The squad, coached by Austin Westlake coach Callan Nokes, included Kasen Schneider of Churchill, Christian De La Cruz and Jake Judkins of Johnson, Brenden Redfern of Westlake and Andy Olson of Reagan.
Young and old: San Antonio’s Gregory Steinhelper played alongside Champions Tour player Rod Spittle, the reigning AT&T Championship winner, at last weekend’s Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Del Monte Golf Course in California.
Steinhelper earned the spot through a First Tee qualifying process that pairs 78 junior players with pros.
Spittle tied for 16th with a 212 total, six strokes behind winner Jeff Sluman.
Junior mints: Reagan’s Tyler Bumpass shot 3-under 213 at last week’s AJGA Lubbock Junior at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech to finish in a tie for 14th.
Champion Tad Darland of Henderson, Nev., fired 204.
Also in the field were Scott Tredo of Fair Oaks Ranch (tied 45th) and Ricardo Del Rio of San Antonio (48th).
Check your calendars: The deadline for the Greater San Antonio Junior Championship on July 26-28 at Brackenridge is Tuesday.
The boys and girls championship fields will be limited to the first 84 to sign up.
The deadline to enter the Greater San Antonio Match Play Championship is July 29. The qualifying and seeding round will be Aug. 6, with match play running Aug. 12-14, all at Willow Springs.

Playing nice: Former St. Mary’s player Matt Vela, aiming for a professional career in 2012, has been awarded the Heartland Conference Sportsmanship Male Athlete of the Year.
The recent graduate, also lauded recently for his academic work, was honored as a player “who distinguishes himself through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior.”
Vela, the 2011 Heartland Conference Men’s Golfer of the Year, holds school career records for most rounds played (125) and most rounds of par or better (39). He ranks second with a 73.27 career scoring average.
