Texas road, bridge named in honor of Carlsbad man
Carlsbad resident Robert Light, right, chats with Jeff Barton, former Hays County, Texas, commissioner, following the dedication of the Robert S. Light overpass bridge in Buda, Texas. Light and Carlsbad developers Mike Garringer and Joe Brininstool developed a residential subdivision in Buda and donated right-of-way for the overpass bridge and a bypass road, also named for Light. Submitted photo CARLSBAD A building or two in Carlsbad carries the name of Robert S. Light in honor of his philanthropic endeavors in the community. Now, there are a bridge and a road that bear his name - in Buda, Texas.Light, a long-time Carlsbad resident and businessman, and a former Eddy County Commissioner and New Mexico legislator, was in attendance for the dedication of the bridge overpass on July 25, along with Texas legislators, state highway officials and Buda business and government leader.
The city is located about 14 miles south of Austin, the state's capital.
Also in attendance were Carlsbad businessmen Joe Brininstool and Mike Garringer, who partnered with Light in the development of the community.
Brininstool said his businesses in Carlsbad keep him busy and required his attention, so he made the decision to leave the partnership about a year ago.
Buda City Engineer Stanley Fees said Light and the developers of a 212-acre commercial and residential development on the west side of I-35 donated land for the needed right-of-way for a much-needed road and bridge overpass.
Light said he was honored to have a road and bridge named after him, but credits Garringer as the man behind the development of the subdivision and the subsequent naming of the road and bridge.
"Mike was heavily involved in the development. He was the one that made it work. It was quite a project," Light said. "I got into it because they needed some financial backing. At the time they were getting started, there was a lot of hesitation because of what was happening in the housing and banking industry. But Buda escaped the housing slump and development is still continuing there."
Garringer said he became interested in the area through a friend that he partnered with in an El Paso, Texas, real estate venture.
Explaining how the naming of the road and bridge after Light came about, Garringer said a county road runs through the middle of the 50-acre commercial property and the overpass bridge was built over the road, known as County Road 132.
