Company description: Gulf Coast Mailing Services offers a variety of services to meet all direct mail and printing needs. We have the latest equipment including bar coding, folding, inserting and direct impression machines as well as full commercial printing capabilities. We can take your project from layout and design, to printing and mailing.

Education: I graduated from Corpus Christi Academy in 1960 and attended Del Mar College from 1960 to 1962.

First job: My father owned a grocery store, an apartment complex and a laundromat. At age 12, I started working at his grocery store. I started as a sacker, then became the butcher and worked the checkout counter. I believe I got my ambition, motivation and self-determination from my father.

Biggest career break: In 1962, I joined the Army Reserves and served until 1968. The U.S. Postal Service had posted a position to operate the Naval Air Station Post Office. I applied and was awarded a government contract as an independent contractor. The Post Office trained me to be the head clerk, with responsibility for all incoming and outgoing military mail, as well as selling stamps and money orders. I was employed there for more than 20 years. In 1998, I saw there was a need for mailing services and decided I wanted to start my own business.

Business turning point: My son Michael joined me in the business from the start and now is in charge of production. We began with people I knew and networking with community organizations. We grew by word-of-mouth and, in 2003, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce named us the small business of the year. We were awarded mail contracts with the city of Corpus Christi, Nueces County and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. We processed all of their outgoing mail.

The majority of our 12 employees have been here for almost the entire 13 years we have been in business. We always have taken care of them and always have been grateful for their hard work and dedication, which has contributed to the success of our business.
