Music Lessons for Our Kids

Without any formal training, my seven-year-old son played Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on an electric keyboard. His camp counselor demonstrated it for him and within minutes he repeated it on his own. By all accounts, I should be filling out early enrollment forms for Julliard. At the least I ought to be signing him up for piano lessons.

But I’m not. Alas, I may have my helicopter parenting moments, but I am not a Tiger Mom. When he’s interested, his dad frequently teaches him rudimentary lessons on his battery-powered keyboard at home, which last until he becomes more interested in wanting to hear the catchy background percussion. Then off he goes pushing the extraneous buttons and having a silly time with tempo. And that’s just fine with us.

I’m certain an hour’s worth of lessons twice a week and daily practice sessions would teach him many things, but I’m not sure a love of music would be one of them. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t hear a CD blasting from his room – everything from Johnny Cash to Frank Sinatra to the latest Glee cover songs. I wish I had recorded the time he sang his own lyrics to Lady Gaga’s Born This Way in the bubble bath. On more than one occasion, he’s almost missed the school bus because he was lost in dancing to Charlie Brown’s Christmas CD.

But I’m not certain teaching our kids to love music is the driving force behind today’s craze for early childhood music lessons. As soon as research studies came out linking learning music to better performance in mathematics, parents scrambled to get their children playing a musical instrument as early as possible. Playing the cello was no longer just a middle school extra curricular activity. Those brain synapses need to be strengthened well before then. It’s like every parent suddenly turned into Shirley Partridge. If you think about it, by today’s standards, Tracy Partridge was way behind playing just a tambourine. For heaven’s sake, wasn’t she like seven? Kids are schooled in the tambourine and maracas by the age of two. If only Tracy had been introduced to the Suzuki program, I Think I Love You could’ve had a violin solo.

But I think that Mrs. Partridge had the right idea. Introduce your children to music and let them take it from there. Come On Get Happy was their theme song, not Stop Complaining and Practice . There comes a time when some kids are ready for the commitment, but I’m not convinced that time is before they can even spell the instrument they’re supposed to play.

Arrietty Review

. The main character is a girl at a young age (expressed by Saoirse Ronan) lives with his parents, perhaps the last of its kind, under the floor of an old Japanese house in the countryside. The arrival of a sick boy at home is the beginning of a series of adventures in what becomes a touching coming-in as an adult story with a strong message about the environment, said Bright dreamlike colors, vivid visual language and sound sensitive.

The small world of the heroine is created, and people characterized by attention to detail. For Arrietty, grasshoppers half its size and chirp purr in a frenzied dance of the legs and wings, ants are collected with both hands and brushed with a considerable effort, from lumps of sugar, water becomes viscosity, surface tension made visible in the thick blood flowed in a tea pot into cups miniature miniatures. The film recreates the sense of novelty and wonder of childhood, the camera focuses on a single leaf or petal - a drop of dew here, a blade of grass there, a love letter painted by nature - and the public is invited to consult the familiar a new perspective.

- Here is a movie with Will Smith as a guy trying to plug Black chick with a Puerto Rican in New York at least the first half of the film is like that. For men who have allowed their women to drag them along to see this romantic comedy, we were all treated to the detonation of a sudden improvised chemical weapon in Manhattan, flash-create a horde of thousands of vampires hybrid zombies that cause mass evacuation will be ignored by our protagonist. Rather than run away like a punk bitch, Will Smith, loops with his dog and a packet of bacon to be the last man living in New York. Not really, (I speak mostly of "I Am Legend"), but still - Very funny, Will Smith, showing why he is one of the biggest stars in the world. - Former independent filmmaker of God / current " Independent Filmmaker "by Robert Rodriguez continues its cavalcade of celebrity cameos with the infamous 2005 release of" Sin City ".The film featured almost zero "real life" scene, except for a few scenes that take place in the streets of downtown at random in Austin, TX (where he still lives), had almost no color per se, was widely expressed in, but it has some very artistic moments damn long pepper (which were being black and white and widely expressed). That said, the film is very sexy and violent - Recommended!..
