When crime pays

When electrical appliance company Clive Peeters went belly up after a senior employee embezzled $20 million of its $33 million annual profit, another large Australian business decided it was time to do an audit.

The bulk goods retailer called in Mark Skipper and his team at Satori to implement Audit Control Language software, which is used to detect fraud by about 80 percent of top organisations around the world.

Skipper, who has a long career in IT, most recently at leading supply chain software company RedPrairie now advises Satori Group customers on how to deliver an effective, 24-hour internal auditing system to prevent revenue loss through fraud or human error.

“For $5,000 a month including software, training and implementation, we monitor every transaction in the business, looking for anomalies,” Skipper explains.

“The software, which takes about two to three days to install, sits on the company’s existing servers sifting through every transaction, across new or legacy platforms.

"It takes into account attendance records, HR and payroll, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, excel spreadsheets accounts payable, expenses, real estate, purchasing- everything.

“The system has about a thousand alerts ready to go and it it's up and running in about two – three weeks. The only time delay is data feeds from the IT department.

“Our team will also do a free pilot for a customer, say, for three months, to see what we can find,” Skipper adds.  “We do that because we know we're going to find issues. We have never not found them.

"We don't mind making the investment because we know people are going to keep on using the system.”

As for the bulk goods retailer, its head of payroll, who had been with the company for 15 years, was creating fake employees the day before the pay run, paying herself then deleting the employee the following day without a trace in the system.

“Typically a payroll office is all separated and secured and no one goes in there except for payroll staff,” Skipper says.  No one spotted it because the company has 2000 employees, a lot of them casuals.  This employee wasn't greedy.  She took just $5.2 million over about seven years.

“When we found it, the company decided not to prosecute because management didn't want its name out there in the media.
