Wyoming's basketball recruits mesh with veterans

COMMUNITY OUTREACH: For the Wyoming Cowboys, community service projects are benefitting in more than one way.

They have participated in activities such as bowling with a group of folks with special needs and scooping out ice cream at a cancer relay event, part of a personal improvement goal that coach Larry Shyatt says will be a monthly activity.

It has also helped quickly bring the group together.

"Those are important for us because we get to go out and see the community and they get to see us," UW senior Adam Waddell said. "And I know somebody who died of cancer, so it was cool to go and be a part of that. We all had fun."

SCHOLARSHIP STILL OPEN: With the departure of guard Joe Hudson, the Cowboys still have one scholarship available for next season, though Shyatt continues to say he's unsure of whether he'll use it.

"We have one scholarship open and there's actually a couple things in the works, possibilities," he said. "I don't really want to do anything unless, again, it's the right fit, it's going to give us a larger degree of stability."

ON THE ROAD: UW senior Francisco "Paco" Cruz arrived back in Mexico this week as one of 60 players vying for a spot on Mexico's team for the World University Games this summer. The tryouts began Friday and run through Thursday.

"Any time our guys have an opportunity to represent their country, I want to try, as long as it doesn't interfere with academics, I want to try to make that happen," Shyatt said.

Also, senior guard JayDee Luster left Friday to help work a basketball camp at the University of Arizona.

LEMME UPGRADE : When the Pokes return for the start of school and practice in late August, they'll quickly notice several improvements.

The men's basketball offices are currently in the midst of an overhaul and the locker rooms are scheduled for an upgrade later this summer.

"Everything that [Shyatt has] brought in is a big-program type of thing," Waddell said. "He's brought in the assistant coaches, he's brought experienced GAs, he's changed everything around in the way we do things, even down to what gear we're getting and how we go out and do community service stuff.

"It's star-studded and cool to be around."
