Bright Eclipse: Nintendo's Next Revolution

E3 2011 is OVER. The secrets are out (well, most of them anyway), and the results are in: Nintendo won. To some, not by much; and to others, by leaps and bounds – but the general consensus is that Nintendo won.

While they tried, Sony and Microsoft’s showing at E3 was a tad underwhelming, leaving it to Nintendo to satisfy the appetites of ravenous gamers. The Big N brought in a live orchestra to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, gave the 3DS something to live for, and proved that Project Cafe wasn’t a coffee maker.

But was Nintendo’s new bag of tricks enough to kickstart its next revolution? In this follow up to last weeks “Hopes & Dreams: Nintendo is About to Make History,” we’ll look into whether or not Nintendo’s latest offering is destined for the history books, or, something else.

As promised, Wii U made it’s E3 debut during Nintendo’s press conference, to seemingly mixed reactions. Naturally, fans cheered when Nintendo lifted the veil on Project Cafe, revealing its official name, but you couldn’t help but notice the tad lack of enthusiasm, likely due to those hoping Nintendo would push aside its Wii antics and move on to a more  hardcore friendly name.

Of course, anyone with half a brain should know that simply doing away with the hugely successful Wii brand, at such an early stage, would be a bad business move on Nintendo’s part — because let’s face it – every major company’s main objective is to bring in revenue, and Wii delivered truckloads. Hence the cliche saying, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it,” and if I might add, “build on it, and make it better.”

Console names are great, but they alone do not drive sales – for Nintendo, that area of expertise belongs to its games, and the way you control them. Enter Wii U’s controller.

As he did with the name, Reggie Fils-Aime introduced its controller, to better applause. As some rumors had suggested, the controller did in fact have a screen in it — a 6.2 inch LCD touch screen, to be exact. Additionally, Wii U features a d-pad, four face buttons, four shoulder triggers, two analog sliders, a power button and a camera.

In the first “Hopes & Dreams,” I proposed:

So, is the system that we now know as Wii U capable of such abilities? Or, am I overshooting it just a bit? Similar to the system I used in part one, let’s connect the dots a bit, using mostly the info provided to us by Nintendo. And maybe, a wee bit of speculation.

Bright Eclipse: Nintendo's Next Revolution

Anyone remember the 2002 GameCube remake of the first RE? To me, that one takes the cake for scariest game of all time. Revelations is the first RE game that reminds me of that remake. Often considered the Holy Grail of video games, The Legend of

First off, Wii U is fully compatible with Wii games; just don't expect to see them all crisp and in HD. GameCube fans are out of luck as Wii U offers no support for GameCube titles. The Wii U demos at E3 showed off a level of graphical detail that

Wii U backwards compatibility stops at Wii, won't upscale games

Nintendo confirmed that the Wii U will be backwarks compatible with the Wii and all of its games and accessories during its E3 press conference. However, the console maker made no mention of Gamecube games and now we know why. Despite the fact that the

2006 saw Sonic's last hurrah on the Game Boy Advance, yet it was hardly the swansong the console deserved. Confident following the strong sales of the previous Sonic GBA games and the Gamecube compilations, Sega converted the very first Sonic the

I also dusted off my copy of Animal Crossing for GameCube this week. I had always preferred this installment to either Wild World or City Folk, which is why I still (infrequently) feel the urge to pop the game into my Wii and check up on my town.

Wii Sports | Nintendo 3ds

A compilation of simple, Wii-playable sports games. Included sports are Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Boxing and Bowling. All of these sports games have a stylized look that’s designed after classic 8-bit game designs but brought to life with full 3D technology. Although each game will concentrate on the core mechanics of hitting a ball, swinging a racquet, and putting with a club, the games will offer full (albeit simplified) sports experiences of whole games in Baseball and Tennis as we

-Not the best graphics in the world

Wii Sports, if you live in America, is the pack in game that comes with the Wii. However, there is still a chance you might find yourself having to purchase it because either your game disc is so damaged (or broke) that you need to get another one, or you bought the system used and whoever sold it didn’t package the game with it. There’s also the possibility that in the future Wii Sports will not ship with the system and will have to be bought separately.

Anyway, as an introduction to the Wii, Wii Sports is a simple game to pick up and fairly fun to play. The Wii remote makes playing these games more fun. Before you boot up this game, however, you’ll have to make yourself a Mii. The game is played using your Mii and as you play the games other Miis that have been created on your system will show up too. Wii Sports includes five games: Bowling, Baseball, Golf, Boxing and Tennis. All of them controlled with the Wii Remote exclusively.

Using the Wii Remote is what really makes playing these games a treat. In bowling, for example, your Wii Remote is your bowling ball. You’ll have to make the motions of bowling to actually toss your ball in the game. In Baseball this not only serves as your bat but also the baseball when you pitch. In golf it is your golf club which you’ll swing to hit the ball like a golfer would. In tennis it’s your tennis racket you’ll use to hit the ball. Boxing is the only game which requires the nunchuck. The Wii Remote is one hand, the Nunchuck is the other. None of these games are hard to pick up and play at all.

I’d love to tell you all five games are winners but that’s really not the case. As stated, this game serves more as an intro to the system and getting you adapted at using the Wii remote. It’s fun, but there are a couple of controls issues that come up every now and then. When playing golf, for example, you’ll find the motion sensor controls aren’t always pot on. You might swing forward on the back swing when it’s clear that wasn’t what you wanted to do. In boxing the controls can be somewhat touchy. You might jab using the remote or nunchuck but it won’t respond. It’s a great idea, but sometimes its annoying. Other times it works flawlessly. The Bowling game is easily the most enjoyable in the compilation while the Baseball may actually be the worst.
