Outstanding Andrew Oldcorn puts rest in shade

THE real Andrew Oldcorn stood so tall at Slaley Hall yesterday, he could look down from a vast distance on a field which included two major winners in Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam and three Ryder Cup captains in Sam Torrance, Woosnam and Mark James.

One of the most underrated golfers in the business finished an astonishing nine strokes clear of his nearest rival and fellow Scot, Gordon Brand Junior, in winning the De Vere Club PGA Seniors Championship, his first victory on the Senior Tour.

His performance was so masterful, one of his playing partners yesterday, Carl Mason, who holds the tour record of 24 victories, did not rule out the possibility of the 51-year-old Oldcorn, a near rookie in this age-group, going on to eclipse his total.

From an unlikely looking launchpad of four over par after the opening eight holes of the first round on Thursday, Oldcorn went on to play the remaining 64 holes in 15 under, giving him an 11-under total of 277 over the four rounds.

On Friday he signed for a six-under 66, the lowest score posted in the tournament since Slaley started hosting the Seniors in 2008.

Saturday was the day he laid the most solid foundation for victory. Given the cold and wet conditions, his 68 was arguably even more impressive.

There were issues concerning slow play on the course and, depending on which official’s version you believe, either his group was put on the clock, if rather harshly, or they were repeatedly being held up by other groups.
