Sculptures take shape
Sawdust and the roar of chain saws floated through a bright, sunny sky in Reedsport as the Oregon Divisional Chainsaw Sculpting Championships continued Friday.
The competition, which began on Thursday, will continue through the weekend, concluding with an auction and awards ceremony Sunday afternoon.
Maureen Wheeler came with her husband Patrick from Beaverton to see the event.
“It’s amazing to watch these artists working,” Wheeler said. “From a log, they create this beautiful stuff.”
It’s a fun event for the competitors, as well.
“I’m having a blast,” Pro Carver Brian Vorwaller said.
Vorwaller, who has been carving for two and a half years, moved from Utah to Bandon to pursue carving.
The theme this year is “Oregon Heritage.” A number of local carvers have chosen oceanic themed sculptures for this event.
North Bend’s Chris Foltz, who placed third in the pro division last year, is working on a tall rendition of a giant northwest octopus swooping down to eat a crab. He’s done similar sculptures before, but not on the scale of this piece, which stood more than five feet tall as of Friday.
“It’s looking pretty good, on schedule, going really well,” Foltz said.
Foltz will also be giving an ice carving demonstration Sunday after the conclusion of the competition.
Reedsport’s Ryan Anderson, competing in the pro division, is crafting a statue of a manta ray and a sea turtle. Anderson has competed in this event for the past five years, winning the semi-pro division in 2009.
“It’s like being the hometown hero,” Anderson said of competing in Reedsport.
The contest also attracts companies in the timber industry with the opportunity to market their products to competitors and spectators alike.
Randy Jensen works for Oregon Chain, and says they are the country’s largest manufacturer of chainsaw accessories. While the company is mainly there for promotional purposes, they can a big help to a contestant with a mechanical problem.
“We support these events by helping professional carvers,” Jensen said. “If they’re having difficulty with a chain or something, we try to help them out.”
In addition to the main event, there’s is a “quick carve” event daily, where pro carvers have 90 minutes to go from raw log to finished product. The pieces are then auctioned off.
